What is a Circle Area & Circumference Calculator?
This calculator computes a circle's area and circumference from its radius or diameter.
How it's calculated
Area S = πr², Circumference L = 2πr = πd
Step-by-step example
Area and circumference of a circle with radius 7cm
- Step 1 Area formula: S = πr² = π×7²
- Step 2 Calculate: 3.14×49 ≈ 153.9 cm²
- Step 3 Circumference: 2πr = 2×3.14×7 ≈ 43.96 cm
Interpretation: Doubling the radius quadruples the area (squared) but only doubles the circumference (linear).
Why is the area formula πr²?
Slice a circle into thin pizza-like wedges and rearrange them alternating direction, and they approximate a rectangle. The rectangle's width is half the circumference (πr), and its height is the radius (r), so the area is πr × r = πr². The thinner the slices, the closer it gets to a perfect rectangle — this is essentially the core idea behind integral calculus.
Good to know
- π is defined as circumference ÷ diameter — the same ratio regardless of a circle's size, whether it's a coin or a planet.
- Archimedes narrowed π to between 3.1408 and 3.1429 using a 96-sided polygon around 250 BCE, and his method remained the standard approach for nearly 2,000 years.
- π is both irrational and transcendental — proven transcendental in 1882, which finally confirmed that the ancient problem of 'squaring the circle' with just a compass and straightedge is mathematically impossible.
- In practice, 40 digits of π are more than enough to calculate the circumference of the observable universe to within the width of a single hydrogen atom.
- When comparing pizza sizes, compare area, not diameter. A 16-inch pizza has 1.33x the diameter of a 12-inch one, but 1.78x the area — the larger pizza is usually the better deal.
Frequently asked questions
Q. How do I find area if I only know the diameter?
Divide diameter by 2 to get radius, then apply πr² — or use πd²/4 directly.
Q. How many digits of π should I use?
3.14 is fine for everyday use; 3.14159 is plenty for engineering purposes.
Q. Which is more sensitive to radius, circumference or area?
Area. Circumference scales linearly with radius, but area scales with the square.
